Shopping can be addictive. Don’t get seduced by all the baby stuff in the shops – you really don’t need it all. Buying some things in preparation for the baby’s arrival can be practical.
Talk to other parents about the best buys in baby equipment, and the money-wasters. Consider using charity shops or eBay for buying nearly new stuff. Or, why not try out sites like Freecycle where you can get used goods for free?
You should think of ways that you can earn extra cash as well. Got a junk-filled spare room that needs to make way for a nursery? Think about what you can sell, for example on eBay or Amazon.
“Sometimes it’s good to hold back on buying loads of stuff before the birth and then just wait and see what you actually need as you could end up buying loads of stuff you don’t end up using.” – Sarah, Essex.
“Using Freecycle is a good idea – I got a nearly new 3 wheeler buggy for nothing! I also bought quite a lot of used baby stuff on eBay like a sun cover and ‘cozy toes’ for a buggy and then sold them on again when I no longer needed them.” – Louise, Manchester.
“Many baby’s clothes are brand new or hardly worn in charity shops because children are born different sizes and those bought ahead of time may not fit so are wasted. Our son benefitted enormously from the legacy of others and was always one of the best-dressed babies.” – Shilpa, Suffolk.
