Postcards from the edge

Everyone needs to feel appreciated

It is important to feel appreciated, especially when things aren’t going so well.

When children arrive, you will probably find that domestic chores and childcare won’t always be split evenly between the two of you. Whoever does most of it (usually the female partner, even if she works), can feel exhausted and weighed down by all that needs doing. She needs to be told that she is doing well and that what she does is appreciated.

At the same time, fathers are often working hard to meet new commitments and when they help with the children and around the house, they also need to feel appreciated.

You both need to feel that you are doing a good job and that you are valued. Some times we are just so busy getting everything done we forget to tell each other. Appreciating each other is really important in building confidence when times are tough. Just recognising that you are both trying can help both of you to cope with the ups and downs of family life.

In thinking about your relationship:

  • Are there any opportunities to offer more practical help to ease the pressure?
  • Are there areas where more appreciation and support could be offered?
  • What are some ways of showing your partner that you value them in what they are doing?
