According to the Travel and Love survey by Expedia, just over 21% of Brits think that they can find love on their summer holidays, but nothing long-lasting.
So are summer romances meant to last? Or are they, as the name suggests, for summer only?
When you start a relationship with the intention of keeping it casual and short-term, you may find that over time you begin to develop strong feelings towards your other half.
When this happens, you may start to ask yourself questions: am I in a situation where I can really focus on making a relationship work? Would I like to experience more relationships with other people? Does my other half feel the same way? What if they don’t?
It’s a good idea to speak to your partner about your feelings and find out what their expectations for the relationship are.
If you both want the relationship to last beyond summer, take these points into consideration:
- If you have met while on holiday in a foreign country, will you both be returning to the same country at the end of the trip? If yes, will you be able to see each other regularly? If not, how will you keep in contact with each other? Will you be able to afford to travel to see each other?
- When you’re on holiday, you have all the time in the world to spend with your boyfriend or girlfriend. But, once you go back home and have to return to your studies or job, you won’t have as much free time to spend together. This might be hard to adjust to at first as you’ll be used to seeing each other whenever you like. Arguments may occur as a result of this – prepare yourself by trying some of the exercises in How To Argue Better.
If you decide to go your separate ways at the end of summer, don’t feel too defeated. Sure, it may take a while to move on from the relationship, however, you should try to find comfort in the fact that you’ve gained valuable experience which will help you in your next relationship.
