Husband & wife problem sleeping together at night

Getting on Better with my Partner

Let me start this question by saying my wife and I love each other more than anything. We've been together for many years and have no serious problems. But we do have one bump in the road for which we are seeking advice.

Throughout my whole life, I have slept with the air conditioner on at night during the summer. My wife has done the exact opposite. She actually can't stand the air conditioner at night. If it's disgustingly hot and we must use it, she has to wear a mask over her face and wear a sweatshirt along with using extra blankets. If we don't use the a/c, I usually can't get to sleep and if I do, I wake up uncomfortable and covered in sweat.

We both do not want to sleep separately but we can't seem to find any compromise! We have tried keeping the air conditioner on at a high temperature. (and with all the windows and doors open) but she just doesn't like it being at all. We've tried using a fan but it ends up drying out both of our eyes and skin.

Does anyone have any advice for a couple who loves each other so much that they can't stand to sleep separately?!

Thanks in advance!

This sounds just like our house a few years ago. My husband couldn't sleep at all when he was too hot, which ended up with him being pretty grumpy with us at home, and not able to concentrate at work. So, the a/c blasted away all night with me shivering, and the cold air going up my nose - unbearable! The only time I was comfortable was when he was working away and I could luxuriate in the lovely warm air and sleep like a baby.

We ended up after many different trials staying in the same bed, turning down the a/c a bit, and getting separate covers. A thick down duvet for me, pulled up over my nose, (temperature outside was 38, but I'm sure there were ice crystals in our bedroom!) and a sheet for him which kept him cool. Not ideal for either of us but a sort of compromise that worked for many years.

We've moved round a lot and have found this arrangement works whatever climate we're living in. Hope that helps!
